System: Thomas Knak, Andreas Renner, Jesper Skaaning. The trio of European producers known for their work as Future 3 -- Thomas Knak, Anders Remmer, and Jesper Skaaning -- reunited in 2002 as System, releasing a straightforward self-titled album of meticulously ornate ambient dub. Stefan Betke, best known for his own ambient dub recordings as Pole, released the album on his Scape label, a suitable home for System considering the label's techno affiliations. Like Betke's work as Pole, System produces ambient dub, yet they come from a techno rather than reggae background and thus infuse the album's tracks with techno-quality production. Every crevice of this album is filled with some subtle sound: traditional dub characteristics like deep basslines and ticking hi-hat percussion and also less traditional ones like shimmering hiss and crackling silence. This is surely high-tech dub, produced by three studio wizards with the latest software at their aid. As such, this album's appeal should spread from the expected fan base of dub enthusiasts to the less expected glitch techno listeners looking for something tranquil and subtle. And while those who enjoyed System's previous work as Future 3 may find this album perhaps a bit too tranquil and subtle, they should nonetheless savor the trio's production mastery and its limitless palette of dub-style sounds. ~ Jason Birchmeier
