The first British rock & roll song to hit Number One in the states wasn't "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," but the Tornados' crackpot classic "Telstar." Named after a new satellite (and blasting off with an actual recording of a rocket being launched), "Telstar" was written and produced by Joe Meek, a self-taught mad scientist of sound whose willful unfamiliarity with "proper" studio technique and genius for electronic tinkering made the song sound utterly unique. "Telstar" was recorded in the sitting room of his small London apartment, a DIY aesthetic unheard of in the early 1960s. Using a clavioline, an early electronic keyboard, as well as some homemade effects and lashings of barely-controlled distortion, Meek created a futuristic outer-space sound to go with his endearingly simple, anthemic tune. THE TORNADOS PLAY TELSTAR AND OTHER GREAT HITS is a perfect single-disc career summary that features many other entertaining Joe Meek confections.
