While John Lennon's work as the literate half of The Beatles' main songwriting team is universally loved, his solo work has proven harder to grasp. Lennon went in a new direction in 1970, producing, raw, angry songs that were almost painful to listen to--and even harder to re-interpret. These long-neglected treasures, however, scream for a fresh look by today's alterna-rockers, whose own songs go for the emotional jugular in much the same way. Fifteen years after his murder, WORKING CLASS HERO delivers with fifteen of John's thorniest compositions. Nowhere is Lennon's bitterness more evident than on the tribute's opening cut, "I Found Out." The tune, an angry cousin of "Come Together," shows the author's resentment of the pop culture he helped initiate. The Red Hot Chili Peppers expertly capture the song's darkness with a characteristically intense performance, clearly reveling in the song's simple, bluesy structure. Also featured among Lennon's more popular solo tunes are Blues Traveler's reverential treatment of "Imagine," Collective Soul's beautiful "Jealous Guy," and Toad The Wet Sprocket's romp through "Instant Karma!"
