This was Blood, Sweat & Tears' apex, and a testimony to the best of the jazz/rock movement. Created by the legendary Al Kooper, the band was one of the major movers in the late-1960s rock scene. Though Kooper had departed after the debut album, this follow-up is bold, brassy, and adventurous, and the arrival of David Clayton-Thomas gave the band a strong singer and focal point. Eclecticism abounds, as an interpretation of an Eric Satie composition is followed by a version of Traffic's "Smiling Phases." Hit singles galore were culled from this record--"Spinning Wheel," "You've Made Me So Very Happy," and "And When I Die,"--not to mention a superb rendition of Billie Holiday's "God Bless The Child."

ブラッド・スウェット・アンド・ティアーズとは、血と汗と涙を意味するが、そもそもこの言葉は、イギリス首相のウィンストン・チャーチルが、第二次世界大戦の最中に英軍を鼓舞するために演説した文章から引かれたものだった。但しその言葉には、もう一つ「労苦」という単語が含まれていた。その後、血と汗の結晶とか、汗と涙の結晶という変形バージョンでも使用され、一般に知られるようになった。この由緒ある言葉を冠したアルバムこそ、ジャズロック、ブラスロックという当時の新ジャンルを語る上で、欠くことの出来ない。何故ならBS&Tの名を世界的に知らしめたあの名曲「スピニングホイール」を収録した記念碑的アルバムだからだ。当時、洋楽の洗礼を受けた私たちは「スピニングホイール」の冒頭で繰り出されるブラスのファンファーレに、雷に打たれたような衝撃を受けた。BS&Tは知らなくても、このファンファーレは誰もが聞き覚えがあろう。テレビやラジオ番組のジングルとして使われてきた。ジャズのフレーバーを漂わせたそのメロディーはとても新鮮で、フォークやサイケデリックなロックに飽きた若者達が飛び付いた。一方でプラスロックの雄、シカゴが遅れてデビューし、チェイスというトランペット部隊を前面にフィーチャーしたバンドも登場すると、ジャズロック、ブラスロックは最盛期を迎える。私は当時、テレビの歌番組で和田アキ子がチェイスの「黒い炎」を熱唱していたことを今でも覚えている。本作はセカンドアルバムだが、シングルカットされてヒットした曲が多い点でもBS&Tの傑作として位置付けられる。残念だが、デビューアルバムは凝りすぎて、テクニックに溺れた中途半端な内容になり、仲間割れを招いた。その後メンバーの再編が行われ、ヴォーカルに起用されたのがデヴィッド・クレイトン・トーマスであった。彼が先述の「スピニングホイール」を作曲した。そのしゃがれた声とシャウト唱法は、一度聴いたら忘れられないほど魅力的で、彼は後にBS&Tの牽引役になっていく。さらに本作は、トータルアルバムとして見ても完成度が高い。エリック・サティの有名なワルツを冒頭とラストで取り入れたり、カントリー調の楽曲やフリージャズ風の長いインスト曲を組み入れるなど随所に工夫が見られる。もちろんブラスによる高度なアンサンブルも聴き応え十分だ。吹奏楽をやる若者達にぜひ聴いて欲しい。

久々に聞きましたけど、５１歳元レコード屋のリストラされちまった店長(長いぞ)にとって永遠のマスター・ピースであります。ましてやリマスターＣＤで聞くと、当時のアナログ盤には無い音まで聞こえてきました。それにしてもすごいメンツで作ったものです。ところが、この後見事に失速しちゃいました。
