Having an outlet for jazz-inclined jungle with their Primary Motive alias, Colchester's Danny C. and Mike Pears used the Twisted Anger name for maliciously kinetic drum'n'bass. Fortunately, an album like The Mothership was about displacing old instincts, the way a rejuvenated partnership can return to sharp dance music with a deceptively underused lo-tech soundfloor that recoiled against itself and produced a fresh but familiar menace. "Feel da Vibe" used tommy-gun drum fills like most bands use effects pedals, spilling them on for sonically logical effect. There were vocals, too, which could be found easily throughout the album, but happily used without expense or intelligence. Hugely homogenous and sometimes far too crowded, The Mothership somehow held together as it shoved the techniques of Dillinja and Capone into corners most had been hesitant to investigate. ~ Dean Carlson|
