It was in San Francisco at a recording session in February of 1952 that tenor man Flip Phillips delivered an authentic "Salute to Pres," acknowledging Lester Young as his primary influence. Keep on Flippin', Vol. 3 in Ocium's chronological Flip Phillips retrospective series presents an overview of his recording activities on the East and West coasts between February and December 1952. The music resulting from these five different sessions clearly referenced several different levels of jazz and popular music; wistful ballads, vestigial swing, fresh bop, revised standards and revisited melodies still associated with Hollywood movies. Highlights include Barney Kessel's "Swedish Pastry" (forever associated with Charlie Parker); Duke Ellington's "Cottontail" and "Empty Bedroom Blues"; Billy Strayhorn's "Take the 'A' Train"; Don Redman's "Cherry"; Charlie Shavers' "Undecided"; a wild "Carioca" and a sizzling, Lester Young-styled, rapid-fire rendition of the "Bugle Call Rag," a merry old wake-up call dating back to 1922. ~ arwulf arwulf
