Power pop-punk is the way to go for this trio on their first release. There's not much to make it stand out from numerous other albums up the same alley in the late '90s and early 2000s, though it's well-played, with sincere, wailing vocals that could stand to lighten up a little once in a while. "Anthemic" is an over-used word to describe such endeavors, but that quality's often here in the urgent vocal harmonies and the slicing chords, which travel some unexpected chord sequences and time changes without delivering killer hooks. The songs are imbued with a tone of assertive individualism, but largely deal with romantic frustration. But the similar, rapid rhythmic charge of the music doesn't totally do justice to the longing and heartbreak evident in many of the lyrics; when they slow to a mid-tempo for the finale, "Follow Up," it almost serves as a wake-up call. ~ Richie Unterberger
