Clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre's early-'60s trio with pianist Paul Bley and bass player Steve Swallow is one of his finest (along with his '50s trio with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer and guitarist Jim Hall). FREE FALL builds on the work that Giuffre, Bley, and Swallow put into the FUSION and THESIS albums (subsequently reissued as one CD titled 1961), as the trio's song structures became increasingly freer as their interplay reached near-telepathic levels.
Giuffre, who also plays a number of other reed instruments, was sticking exclusively to clarinet with this ensemble. Its woody resonance blends exquisitely with Bley's piano and Swallow's string bass (an instrument he abandoned permanently in favour of the bass guitar shortly after this album was recorded). The CD reissue adds four tracks from the same sessions, nicely appending this important '60s work.|
