Soul label Malaco Records was never as well known as Chess, Sun, or Stax, but it managed something that none of those labels did: it survived for 30-some years, and it still continued as an active label as of 2004. Southern Soul Cellar was compiled by DJ Peter Young, the venerable host of the BBC Soul Cellar radio show, and it pulls together several Malaco artists like Bobby Bland, Lou Rawls, and Johnnie Taylor. The typical Malaco sound, if there is one, was less dynamic and raw than Stax, with smoother melodies and at least the veneer of sophistication, while still retaining a bluesy R&B base of operations. New material from the label is firmly in the urban neo-soul camp, but as a quick listen to the 34 selections here will show, Malaco prefigured all of that years ago, making listening to this set feel a little bit like eavesdropping on an alternative history of Southern soul. ~ Steve Leggett|
