The British superclub-turned-brand Cream sequences together two discs of the freshest summery Euro-dance hits on its Beach 2002 album. It's perhaps better to think of the songs as sequenced together rather than mixed, because Cream doesn't boast a big-name DJ here, and the mixing isn't very labored, not to mention smooth or seamless. But the songs are sequenced nonstop, nonetheless, giving this album a danceclub feel -- or, better yet, an open-air, sunny beach-party feel. Cream compensates for the unimpressive mixing with a dazzling selection of timely selections. All of these songs are, to a varying extent, club hits, and most of them were brand new when Cream released this album in summer 2002. The first disc leans toward house and 2-step while the second disc veers toward progressive trance. Depending on your personal preference, you're likely to favor one disc over the other, but, everything considered, the first disc is the real prize. It's loaded with big names like Timo Maas, Basement Jaxx (remixing Missy Elliott), Paul Oakenfold, X-Press 2, Fatboy Slim (remixing the Chemical Brothers), Kylie Minogue, and several hot songs by up-and-comers like Moony ("Dove"), Tim Deluxe ("It Just Won't Do"), and Royksopp ("Poor Leno"). The less diverse second disc has its fair share of big names as well, most notably multiple contributions from DJ Tiesto and Ferry Corsten, and it also has two updates of trance classics "Madagascar" and the album-concluding "Cafe Del Mar." Cream Beach 2002's onslaught of big names and big hits outweighs whatever qualms you may have about the jumpy mixing. Furthermore, the inclusion of two discs with very different styles ensures that there's something for everyone here. Beach parties aren't personal experiences, after all; they're communal. As usual, Cream has gone out of its way to compile an album appropriately, and impressively, suited for such occasions. ~ Jason Birchmeier
