In 1998, Oakland's the Coup dropped their third effort, STEAL THIS ALBUM, an overt reference to Abbie Hoffman's STEAL THIS BOOK, and a good indication of the politically minded, anti-capitalist content found within. "The Shipment" begins on a high note, with a loose retro-funk backing up Boots Riley's superficially light-hearted sing-song rap, one that invites deeper inspection with such lines as "I slang rocks/but Palestinian style". The epic seven-minute "Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Granada Last Night" weaves a near Dylan-worthy yarn of a street urchin's existence through the years. Del tha Funkee Homosapien lends his talents on one track as does former member E-Roc. Generally considered the Coup's finest record, STEAL also saw re-release in 2002 as STEAL THIS DOUBLE ALBUM, including two extra tracks and a separate live disc.|
