Former X bassist John Doe returns with an attractive, if oblique set combining vaguely rootsy guitar-driven rock (albeit with unconventional chord changes and neo-beatnik lyrics) with more confrontational, fast-paced songs that recall the energy, if not the sound, of his old band. Throughout, Doe croons as much as he sings, and much of the album has an old-before-its time, autumnal feel.
Pick hit: "Too Many Goddamn Bands", an angry screed expressing the frustration many music fans may have felt at the dawn of the millennium. Inspirational verse from "Beat Up World": "There's a tiger hanging over my shoulder/It's fuzzy and fluffy and wants to eat me".|
