Silent Sound's Butch Baldassari plays the mandolin like he is reaching directly into your chest and strumming the strings of your heart. His partner, multi-instrumentalist David Hoffner, creates beds of sound over which Baldassari's simple, aching mandolin melodies float. The arrangements have the woody resonance of chamber music, but are saved from primness by electronic flourishes, weird touches ("Three Colors" ends with a smattering of backwards guitar), and exotic instrumentation (marxophone and mandocello are commonplace in Silent Sound's world). The songs tend towards sweetness; "Cavatina," a beautiful aria, brings to mind Tuscan vineyards and villas. The most exciting departure, "As Far as I Can See," features a hypnotic, Philip Glass-like repetitive hook. In the presence of icy, clipped percussion and ominous keyboard tones, the mandolin takes on an almost sinister personality. Nevertheless, the overall tone of the album is soothing and upbeat. As the title suggests, NIGHTFALL makes a relaxing soundtrack for day's end.
