Part '60s rave-up, part space-age bachelor pad music, part compendium of all the TV themes you've ever heard--yes, it's a Danny Elfman score, with added big-budget orchestration and a generous helping of swooping John Williams-type strings for good measure. Elfman's ingenious combination of schlock pop smarts and genuflections at the altar of Bernard Herrmann makes for an absorbing listen--it's likely that one day he'll be enshrined along with the master--and also works as a stand-alone piece. His gamelan-type voicings on "Customs" are a delight and it's always a pleasure to see how he develops a very basic theme, worrying and tearing at it until it's transformed into--well, a seamless movie score. Elfman was obviously born to make this type of music. He's by turns innovative and traditional, never ponderous or overblown, yet keeps his innate goofiness in check enough to make the original soundtrack to MEN IN BLACK II a consistently absorbing listen.
