RED & GOLD continues the strong but unassuming string of releases that Fairport Convention issued in the '80s (following GLADYS' LEAP, EXPLETIVE DELIGHTED and the live IN REAL TIME) via their own Woodworm Records label. Simon Nicol, the only original member, had become an effective and engaging front man, singing with a mellifluous verve. The well-balanced ensemble of Nicol, drummer Dave Mattacks, bass player Dave Pegg, violinist Ric Sanders and multi-instrumentalist Martin Allcock is now the longest running line-up in Fairport Convention's history. Fairport Convention continues to champion great songwriters, both celebrated (Bob Dylan) and lesser-known (Ralph McTell). While not as daring as the band's work of two decades prior, RED & GOLD still finds rich melodicism in the hybrid of traditional British Isles musics and contemporary folk-rock.|
