Does the future of music reside in remixing and splicing the past? If so, Kid606's The Action Packed Mentallist Brings You the Fucking Jams might position the artist as the burgeoning scene's most prominent practitioner. Like Freelance Hellraiser's underground hit that saw an unauthorized, unholy union of Christina Aguilera and the Strokes, Kid606's album blends Top 40 tunes into entirely new beastly creations. But no track seems geared to the radio, as demented sound effects and massively fuzzy beats take the songs many steps away from the usual accessible radio fare. Where Freelance Hellraiser's "A Stroke of Genius" left the original's pop charms intact, Kid606's mixes throw in wrenches of white noise and dollops of increasingly less-fashionable clicks & cuts, seemingly begging the world's radio DJs to steer clear. Kid606 seems to present a blueprint here for future hit-mixers. The formula is simple, as heard on "Never Underestimate the Value of a Holler (Vipee-Pee Mix)": take a bit of Missy Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On," some snippets of Jay Z.'s "Big Pimpin'," an Eminem rap, a small dose of Yello, and some Ozzy Osbourne screeches, and a new sonic stormer is born. Other tracks see the kid pillaging Radiohead, the Bangles, the Buggles, and Kylie Minogue. It's highly likely that "A Stroke of Genius" and Kid606's "Smack My Glitch Up" spawned Minogue's 2002 New Order homage, where "I Can't Get You out of My Head" and "Blue Monday" shake hands. The Action Packed Mentallist Brings You the Fucking Jams is a fun album, though it seems rushed, perhaps because Kid606 wanted to stake his claim in the genre. Kid606 isn't a master in the scene of mixing pop hits, but his boldness in the face of inevitable litigation will quite possibly inspire a new generation of music-makers. ~ Tim DiGravina
