Christian rock band Pax 217 had already built up a strong cult following with its first album, but on its second time at bat the group broke through in a major way with ENGAGE. Hard rock guitar riffs mix with reggae basslines, melodic pop choruses, funk grooves, and turntable hijinks. While the rap-rock orientation of some of the songs might lead you to think that these guys are yet another arrival on the aggro-rock train with a laundry list of societal complaints, Pax 217 is in fact a band with a positive, uplifting message. They don't proselytize or shove their beliefs down the listener's throat, but they don't shy away from their faith-based topics either. The lyrical themes presented aren't strictly on the sunny side; the songs on ENGAGE deal with many of life's tribulations, but the spirituality and hope underlying it all provide a workable contrast to the heaviness of the band's sonic attack.
