A physically frail and somewhat gossamer-looking Rastaman, Augustus Pablo was the unlikeliest of reggae pioneers. Armed only with a humble melodica and a mystical, Far Eastern-influenced sound, Pablo (born Horace Swaby) revolutionized roots reggae and dub, both as an instrumentalist and behind the mixing desk as a producer. EAST OF THE RIVER NILE, his first self-produced instrumental set, appeared in 1978 at the dawn of the dancehall era. While the album's pure, meditative vibes focus on Eastern themes and Rastafarian spirituality, a fine show of meat-and-potatoes roots musicianship is provided by members of the legendary groups the Wailers and the Upsetters.
