Katalog anthologizes Roman Flugel's work as Eight Miles High since the mid-'90s and paints a picture of a restless producer who isn't afraid to avoid any sense of formula while remaining in the realm of experimental electronic music. Rather than finding a niche or any one stylistic path to follow, Flugel follows his instincts and is just as smitten with noise and formlessness as he is with carefully crafted, heart-tugging melodies. One could call this whimsical approach to production scattered and aimless, but there's little denying that Flugel creates something that captures the mind and pleases the ears -- while often challenging them -- with most turns of the knob. "Tribute to Peter Von Zahn" could be mistaken for English pranksters Position Normal with its bizarre, disorienting sounds and warped fun-house vocal effects. "Things That Keep You Warm" is practically jovial, offsetting eerie keyboards with a blanketed bassline and tip-tapping percussion. "In This Place," previously found on Kompakt's Schaffelfieber, is Flugel's contribution to shuffle-tech, built on a paranoid pulse-rhythm and a persistent approximation of pig oinks. To get the clearest picture of Flugel's diversity, compare the aggressive techno stomp of "Ride 'Em" to the charming bounce of "Pure Beauty." For someone who has been kicking around for a full decade, Flugel appears to show no sign of receding from his status as a valued producer. ~ Andy Kellman|
