This second disc of performances from Hooker's 1976 Hunter College concert find the venerable bluesman in his natural habitat--alone onstage with only his serpentine guitar licks and authoritative footstomping for company. Hooker agreed to do this impromptu solo show between gigs with his band, and his delight at the opportunity to stretch out, unhampered by other musicians, is audible. A big plus is the ability the circumstances afford Hooker to explore the low dynamic. The expert minimalism of his guitar work and the ominous low-key quality of his singing invest these deep blues with an extra level of resonance. From the randy "You Ain't Too Old to Shift Them Gears" to the harrowing "Trying To Survive", this is Hooker at his absolute best. Essential listening for any blues aficionado.|
