The sharply written lyrics and state-of-the-art production employed on Mark Chesnutt's records (not to mention his friendly, emotionally accessible vocal style) have helped him to become a country superstar. As this self-titled effort makes plain, Chesnutt has never ventured into pop-rock crossover to grab that brass ring. He does offer a fresh take on the form; the humor-tinged roadhouse rock of "Don't Know Why I Do It" is worthy of NRBQ (or at least of latter-day Al Anderson), and the bluesy, swampy groove of "Population Minus One" frames a quirky, spoken vocal that tells of desire and distance. Still, "You'd Be Wrong" and "She Was" stand to prove that Chesnutt has a warm, natural way with a classic Nashville-style ballad (not the Journey-esque power balladry of his more crass contemporaries). And the whole of MARK CHESNUTT serves as a reminder that even in the 21st century its still possible to achieve mainstream success without sacrificing one's aesthetic principles.
