CHAPEL OF LOVE AND OTHER GREAT GIRL GROUP GEMS features the music of great "girl groups" of the '60s and includes the songs "Chapel Of Love," "Bobby's Girl," and "Leader Of The Pack." The box housing this modestly titled three-CD set, Chapel of Love and Other Great Girl Group Gems, from British archival label Castle Pulse contains a sticker noting that it "includes 19 ultra-rare tracks on CD for the first time." Those tracks are not identified, but their inclusion should give the potential buyer a sense of the collection's focus. If 19, or nearly a third, of the 60 tracks are ultra-rare, many others are not very well-known, either. There are hits featured on the set, starting with the Dixie Cups' title song and also including the Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack," "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)," and "I Can Never Go Home Anymore," and there are several familiar names, among them the Three Degrees, the Ad Libs, Shelley Fabares, and Gladys Knight & the Pips. But this is not so much a "best of the girl groups" as it is a rarities collection. Compilers Mick Patrick and Malcolm Baumgart had access to the catalogs of a clutch of small, early-'60s labels, including Leiber and Stoller's Red Bird, Swan, and Vee Jay, but nothing from producer Phil Spector, for instance, so they couldn't have constructed a comprehensive survey of girl group recordings. Even within what they could have used, however, they tended to choose the lesser-known of a group's hits. For example, they skipped the Ad Libs' "The Boy from New York City," which reached the Top Ten, in favor of "He Ain't No Angel," which barely made the charts, and "I'm Just a Down Home Girl," which didn't chart at all. There are gems among these obscurities, such as Marcie Blane's "Bobby Did" (an early Neil Diamond composition). This is a collection for people who already have the basics of the early-'60s girl group sound in their collections, and want to hear rare material from some of its lost practitioners. ~ William Ruhlmann
