With the exception of an alternate take of pianist Wally Rose's feature on "Black and White Rag" (which is from 1941), this second of three CD volumes (an otherwise straight reissue of the earlier Good Time Jazz Lp) is taken from May-June 1946 when Lu Watters' Yerba Buena Jazz Band had their first postwar sessions. For the particularly strong set, the program is divided between memorable originals by the leader (highlighted by "Big Bear Stomp" and "Emperor Norton's Hunch") and rags (including Turk Murphy's "Trombone Rag," "Harlem Rag" and "That's A Plenty"). The two- trumpet frontline of Watters and Bob Scobey set the standard for dixieland bands of the next 20 years. All of this music (plus lots more) is also available in Watters' highly essential four-CD Good Time Jazz box set. ~ Scott Yanow
