This is the first of three CDs reissued by the Good Time Jazz label that has all of the recordings from the first sessions by Lu Watters' Yerba Buena Jazz Band when they reunited after World War II. Two selections ("You Can't Shush Katie the Gabbiest Girl in Town" and "Maple Leaf Rag") are added to the original LP program. With trumpeters Lu Watters and Bob Scobey, trombonist Turk Murphy, and clarinetist Bob Helm forming an imposing front line, the Yerba Buena Jazz Band practically defined revivalist jazz. Highlights include "Minstrels of Annie Street," "Jazzin' Babies Blues," "Ostrich Walk," and "Ory's Creole Trombone." True Lu Watters fans will want to pick up his four-CD Good Time Jazz box set instead of these individual releases. ~ Scott Yanow
