This is one of the most humorous of the Firehouse Five Plus Two recordings. Gathering together friends and relatives to simulate a party, the Firehouse Five play their usual brand of spirited and exuberant Dixieland. Between songs the crowd (which sounds purposely drunk) shouts out requests and makes a variety of silly remarks about the music and the party itself. The performance is pretty continuous, and the highlights include "Let's Have a Party," "At the Fireman's Ball," "Ballin' the Jack," "Bill Bailey," "The Saints," and "I Want a Girl Just Like the Girl Who Married Dear Old Dad." Trumpeter Danny Alguire, trombonist Ward Kimball, and soprano saxophonist George Probert are among those clearly having a great time. ~ Scott Yanow
