The Good Time Jazz label was formed in 1949 to record the Firehouse Five Plus Two and during its 20 years (particularly during 1949-59) it was one of the top Dixieland labels. It has been revived in the 1990s, most of its releases have been reissued on CD and there have even been a few new recordings. This four-CD box set is a definitive overview of the label. There is no previously unreleased material included but virtually every group that recorded for GTJ is represented: Jelly Roll Morton (1938 solos acquired years later), Burt Bales, Paul Lingle, Luckey Roberts, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Wally Rose, the Banjo Kings, Jesse Fuller, Bunk Johnson, Kid Ory, George Lewis, Johnny Wiggs, Eddie Pierson, Santo Pecora, Armand Hug, Sharkey Bonano, Paul Barbarin, Bill Matthews, George Girard, the Silver Leaf Jazz Band, Scott Black's Hot Horns, Lu Watters, Benny Strickler, Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey, the Bay City Jazz Band, Don Ewell, Clancy Hayes, Pete Daily, Kid Ory, the Castle Jazz Band and the Firehouse Five Plus Two. Although completists will prefer to get the full sessions (except for some of the Banjo Kings titles, virtually all of the selections are available elsewhere on CD) but the very attractive 60-page booklet and the definitive nature of the box will make it a tempting purchase. ~ Scott Yanow
