Gathered mostly from two of Freddie Hubbard's classic recordings, THE BODY & THE SOUL and THE ARTISTRY OF FREDDIE HUBBARD, this 1998 GRP Records collection is a visit to the early days of a jazz trumpet legend. Bursting out of the tradition of Clifford Brown and Fats Navarro, Hubbard quickly laid claim to their legacy of hot, technically daring improvisation and brave, big sound. Hubbard emerged onto the scene as such a fully blown player that it's hard to believe how young he was when he made these recordings. Hubbard is joined here by such standouts as Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Cedar Walton (piano), and Curtis Fuller (trombone). Hubbard's ability to take control of a theme and rework it with both bravado and nuance is evident in all the tracks. Hubbard's take on "Body and Soul" is beautifully gentle, whereas he charges into the up-tempo "Aries" with shimmering force, gliding along fearlessly above the other horns.
