This two-disc compilation actually covers the period from 1941 to 1947, a rather odd definition of "The War Years," but no matter--this is fabulous stuff whatever one calls it. By 1941, Ella Fitzgerald was still a young singer, barely in her 20s, but after a stint with Chick Webb's swing orchestra, she was already recognized as one of the hottest singers in jazz. Fitzgerald made a smart move at this point, and rather than join another bandleader's orchestra, she struck off on her own, occasionally leading her own band but more often sitting in with any orchestra that would have her. And that was just about all of them, judging by the who's-who of jazz listed in these credits. The material is first rate and the remastering is excellent. This is a textbook example of how to do a jazz reissue.
