Hipsters can lambast composer/keyboardist John Tesh all they like, but amid all their accusations of "aural wallpaper" they ignore the fact that the guy really means it. He's no new age exploitation artist, he's in absolute earnest when he presents his carefully constructed, pristinely produced instrumental works. PURE MOVIES is no exception; in the album's liner notes, Tesh attests to his lifelong love affair with cinema, describing how he attempts here to evoke through his piano-dominated compositions the magic he feels in a great film. Instead of reaching back to the classic film scores that have been covered a thousand times, Tesh keeps things relatively current, tackling the themes from films like Titanic, Sleepless in Seattle and An Officer And A Gentleman. As ever, Tesh's sound on PURE MOVIES is lush and romantic, a simple but effective statement, wherein he puts down his composers pen for a moment to tackle a group of pieces that are close to his heart.
