Soulmotor's sophomore disc finds the band to be more comfortable in its skin. While the debut disc was publicized as Brian Wheat's new project, and most of the attention went toward the erstwhile (and, as of the release of Revolution Wheel, back in the fold again) member of Tesla, a new record and the time spent touring for the first seems to have allowed the band to actually become a band, and the member who takes the most advantage of this is vocalist Darin Woods. On the debut, his regal pipes were obvious; here, he virtually explodes from the speaker, making every song his own. Check out "Lotus Throne," for example, where the band approximates a Sevendust dirge, or "Staring at the Sun," where he comes off like a younger Ian Astbury. His newfound confidence propels the solid riffs, musicianship, and classic pure rock songwriting that still fits nicely in a world gone nu-metal. ~ Brian O'Neill|
