Lumin is the San Francisco-based duo of Jeffery Stott and Michael Emenau. Stott is a multi-instrumentalist whose arsenal includes oud, hammered dulcimer, and a bowed string and drone instrument called the yali-tambur. Emenau handles sampling and percussion duties, often leaning towards trance rhythms. In this outing they are joined by vocalist Irina Mikhailova who lends a decidedly gypsy air to their sound. Steeped in Middle Eastern sounds and electronica, HADRA begins with a fierce drum passage on "Stiga." The oud on "Vchera Minah" bends into a bittersweet groove. Mikhailova's vocals on "Iz Pod Duba" sound like they're emanating from some far-off transistor radio. Overall, Hadra discovers uncharted territories rich in atmosphere and rhythmic dexterity.
