No Depression - "...Finds Lou Ford rolling out their most country/roots-leaning songs to date....a sophmore success..."
Magnet - "...This is the indescribable, sadly soothing, almost-familiar music that's fallen between the cracks of everything else....the kind of deceptively simple music that lost its audience 20 years ago, back in the days of AM radio..."

This album by North Carolina band Lou Ford is full of ambitious, anthemic guitar pop with alternative country and folk-rock touches. The opener, "Storz' Bar," certainly sets the bar high, building steadily with Beatlesque flourishes and welling harmonies and then finally giving way to a rugged, Neil Young-like guitar solo. "A Mile Away," meanwhile, is unabashed, glorious power pop, once again featuring fine vocal harmonies a la Big Star or Matthew Sweet. And like those two artists, Lou Ford has an uncanny ear for melody. The band doesn't have an aversion to dirtied-up barroom rock either, as the supple, Stonesy "Replacement" proves. The North Carolina combo's pop smarts even shine through on more rootsy numbers, such as "What've I Gotta Do." This is a fine effort from top to bottom from a group with uncanny melodic chops. ~ Erik Hage|
