Try as they might, the people who planned and promoted Woodstock '94 as a festival that would define a new generation as the original had 25 years before, they simply couldn't force it to happen. So, what was left was simply a really big rock concert with a false sense of historical significance and a bad faux-hippie vibe. This video captures some of the sights and sounds of the Saugerties, New York festival site, interspersing performances with some random crowd footage and mostly incoherent interviews. And while it may seem that all the time that the focus is shifted away from music would be detrimental to to the video, that is in fact what makes it slightly salvageable. The crowd footage is so welcome because it distracts from the music, as the choice of songs selected is inexplicably bad. Some of the artists present can remind you just how long ago 1994 was (remember Live? how about Candlebox?), while the songs included from more enduring bands will leave viewers scratching their heads. So while the lofty ambitions of festival promoters were doomed to fail, the artists line-up here, though a bit stale, is still fairly solid, and it's unfortunate that poor song selection condemned this video to the same fate. ~ Brian Egan
