The complete cycle of Haydn symphonies being recorded by conductor Giovanni Antonini, with the Kammerorchester Basel and Il Giardino Armonico, has been a success, with sharp, idiomatic Haydn performances throughout. Rather than plowing through the symphonies chronologically, Antonini has grouped them thematically, which is all to the good. Most albums include a relevant work from a Haydn contemporary, but Volume 15 lacks one of those; listeners sampling the series might pick another volume. However, the Haydn performances here are very strong, as usual. The theme this time, La Reine ("The Queen"), does not refer to any specific queen but closely or loosely to various regal figures. That referenced in the subtitle La Reine (not Haydns) of the Symphony No. 85 in B flat major, H. 1/85, is none other than Marie Antoinette, who apparently liked the work. Antonini captures the wild originality of the piece at such junctures as the second subject of the opening-movement Vivace, with its two lines of blank counterpoint filled out later in the movement. His approach is rhythmically vigorous without going over the top; sample the Minuet of the Symphony No. 62 in D major, Hob. 1/62. Although not the best choice for listeners new to Antoninis series, this recording will, like others in the series, remain a model release for years to come.
