Alice Cooper played with many different bandmembers over the years while touching upon several different musical styles. The 1991 90-minute home video Prime Cuts explores Alice's career from the beginning up until the then-present time, including 24 videos of songs intercut with recollections from manager Shep Gordon, producer Bob Ezrin, celebrity fans (Slash, Ozzy, etc.), and, of course, the Coop himself. But like the early-'90s Polygram home videos from another famous theatrical band, Kiss, Prime Cuts mostly only includes brief clips of each song; very rarely is a song featured in its entirety. Still, Prime Cuts is a must-have for Cooper fans everywhere -- plenty of selections from the original Alice band are featured, such as "I'm Eighteen," "Black Ju Ju," "Hello Hooray," "Billion Dollar Babies," "School's Out," and more, as well as analyses of each of the original member's personalities. You'll also finally find out the scoop on Alice's infamous on-stage "chicken incident," plus the solo Alice faves "Only Women Bleed," "Clones," "Department of Youth," and "How You Gonna See Me Now." Prime Cuts is one of the more interesting and better hard rock documentary home videos from the '90s, resulting in an excellent overview of Alice Cooper's unique career. When Prime Cuts was reissued as a DVD in October of 2001, several bonus bits were added, making it a double-disc set. The first disc features the original Prime Cuts documentary in its entirety, while the second disc comes with a photo gallery and an interactive game. While the game itself is quite tedious (you control it by rolling an imaginary dice), it contains over an hour of recent interviews with Alice and members of the original Alice Cooper band (guitarist Michael Bruce, bassist Dennis Dunaway, and drummer Neal Smith), during which they trace the group's beginnings and discuss late guitarist/other founding member Glen Buxton. Disappointingly, no classic live footage has been added to the package (mostly dress-rehearsal clips of Alice and his Spinal Tap-ish backing band circa 1987's forgettable Raise Your Fist and Yell album), but the new interviews offer great insight into the original Alice Cooper band, which makes it an even more definitive purchase for longtime fans. ~ Greg Prato
