The first Hanson DVD is not as stunning as At the Fillmore. 1997's Tulsa, Tokyo & the Middle of Nowhere is a behind the scenes look at the band's rise to fame and the Middle of Nowhere world tour. The DVD captures the personalities of the young rockers during their first phase, growing pains and all. It is important to note that there are some live performances (five in all) but Tulsa, Tokyo & the Middle of Nowhere is more of a tour documentary than a concert video. The 82-minute long look at the band includes interviews and some footage shot by the bandmembers themselves. A double bill of Tulsa, Tokyo & the Middle of Nowhere and At the Fillmore should be every Hanson fan's dream sick day from school. Unlike the Fillmore show, however, Tulsa, Tokyo & the Middle of Nowhere won't stand the test of time as well, because it captures a young, inexperienced band thrust onto a world stage not conquering it yet. A cool soundcheck at the Sydney Opera House (where, of course, they sing "MMMBop") and four songs from its performance at the Beacon Theatre in New York are included ("Thinking of You," "Where's the Love," "A Minute Without You," and "MMMBop"). Overall, a good document of where Hanson came from. But if you haven't already seen it, start with At the Fillmore. ~ JT Griffith
