様々なスタイルのフォーク・ミュージックを作品ごとに表現しながら、「アメリカーナ」という音楽を探求し続けてきたアリンダ・セガーラが主宰するプロジェクト、ハレイ・フォー・ザ・リフ・ラフ。ライヴ・アクトとしても高い評価を集める彼らがシカゴのオールド・タウン・スクール・オブ・フォーク・ミュージックにて昨年夏に行われた2回のソールド・アウト・ショウを収録したライヴ・アルバム、『LIVE FOREVER』をリリース!

ブロンクスに生まれ、現在はニューオリンズを拠点に活動するシンガー・ソングライター、アリンダ・セガーラが主宰するプロジェクト、ハレイ・フォー・ザ・リフ・ラフ。2008年にファースト・アルバムをリリースして以降、様々なスタイルのフォーク・ミュージックを作品ごとに表現しながら、「アメリカーナ」という音楽を探求し続けてきたこのプロジェクトだが、2022年にNonesuchレーベルに移籍、同年移籍第一弾作品となる『LIFE ON EARTH』を発表、New York Times紙やRolling Stone、MojoやUncutといったメディアから2022年のベスト・アルバムの一枚に選出されるなど非常に高い評価を受け、続けて2024年に発表した『THE PAST IS STILL ALIVE』をリリース。こちらもPitchforkで「2020年代のベストアルバム」の一つに選出され、The New York TimesやRolling Stone、NPR Musicなど数多のメディアで「2024年のベストアルバム」として絶賛された。(1/2)

ハレイ・フォー・ザ・リフ・ラフの最新作『LIVE FOREVER』。本作は、バンドリーダーであるアリンダ・セガーラの新たな拠点となったイリノイ州シカゴのオールド・タウン・スクール・オブ・フォーク・ミュージックにて昨年夏に行われた2回のソールド・アウト・ショウを収録したライヴ・アルバムである。全14曲を収録した本作では、『THE PAST IS STILL ALIVE』の全曲演奏に加え、ICE(米国移民関税執行局)を非難する詩的な「Precious Cargo」や、アンセムとして名高い「Pa'lante」、デジタル社会を鋭く批判した「Pyramid Scheme」、そしてフォークロック調に熱演された「Rhododendron」など、ハレイ・フォー・ザ・リフ・ラフのライブを象徴する楽曲も披露されている。アリンダ・セガーラに加えバンドには、パーカー・グローガン(Gt, Vo)、ンナムディ・オグボンナヤ(Ba, Cho)、マーカス・ドレイク(Dr)、セン・モリモト(Sax, Key)という最新のツアーメンバーが参加し、ジョニー・ウィルソンがアルバムのプロデュースを手掛けている。

本作をリリースするにあたり、アリンダは次のようにコメントしている:
「2024年9月、『The Past Is Still Alive』をリリースした年にシカゴへ移り住み、新しいバンドメンバーと共にツアーに出た。全員がこの街にゆかりがあり、DIYシーンで10年以上共に演奏してきた仲間たちだ。それ以来、私たちは家族のように世界中を旅し、私の人生で最高のショーを披露してきた。シカゴは私にとっての家となり、国内最高の音楽シーンに温かく迎え入れられたことに深く感謝している。

After the arrival of their highly acclaimed eighth studio album, early 2024s The Past Is Still Alive, Hurray for the Riff Raffs Alynda Segarra relocated from Nashville to Chicago, a city they have since credited with having the best music scene in the country. Segarra quickly put together (with help from front-of-house/production manager Johnny Wilson) a new backing band with roots in the citys D.I.Y. scene, and they toured the world in support of the album. Live Forever was culled from two sold-out shows at Chicagos Old Town School of Folk Music in July of 2025. That new lineup consists of drummer Marcus Drake, guitarist/backing vocalist Parker Grogan, bassist/backing vocalist Nnamdi Ogbonnaya (aka NNAMDI), and, on keyboards and saxophone, Sen Morimoto, the latter two of whom are known as solo artists in their own right. The albums 14-song set list includes loyal versions of nearly the entire The Past Is Still Alive LP, including "Alibi" and "Hawkmoon," which kick off the evening. The band then launch into a more electrified version of the folk-punky "Rhododendron" from 2022s Life on Earth, one of two songs here taken from that record. Also included is the February 2025 single "Pyramid Scheme," a bouncy, lightly hooky ditty and highlight that makes reference to Darby Crash and Calamity Jane, among others, as it seems to critique society and a partner at the same time ("This is not a joke/Theres a hole in the boat"). The live album closes on fan favorite "Palante" from 2017s The Navigator ("I just wanna go to work/And get back home/And be something"), but otherwise sticks with the new LP and its similarly personal-sociopolitical subject matter. Produced by the aforementioned Johnny Wilson, Live Forever is full of warm and gritty textures and includes just enough crowd noise to transport listeners without competing with the music. ~ Marcy Donelson
