Gimme Shelter is the Rolling Stones' documentary of their 1969 U.S. tour. When the tour began, it was supposed to be the group's triumphant return to the concert stage (they hadn't toured in some time), with new guitarist Mick Taylor in tow. But no one could predict its disastrous ending -- a free concert in Altamont that featured Jefferson Airplane, CSNY, and the Stones was marred by horrible violence from the Hell's Angels (who were hired as concert security that day), resulting in the stabbing death of a young fan -- all clearly captured on film. But besides the shocking ending, Gimme Shelter is a fine documentary solely on the strength of the Stones' live performance -- many faves are played, such as "Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Under My Thumb," "Love in Vain," and "Sympathy for the Devil," as well as a glimpse in the recording studio. Also included are performances from Ike & Tina Turner (they opened the majority of the shows) and Jefferson Airplane, plus interviews with the Stones and other behind-the-scenes footage. Gimme Shelter is hands down one of the best (and first) documentaries of a rock band. ~ Greg Prato
