『Some Friendly』を改めて聴き直すと、当時それを意識していたかどうかに関わらず、ザ・シャーラタンズが最初から "長く愛され、親しまれるバンド" であることを十分に体現していた。

過去40年にわたりUKで最も愛されてきたバンドのひとつ、ザ・シャーラタンズ。合計14枚ものアルバムに及び、全英アルバム・チャート1位を3作品で獲得。「The Only One I Know」「North Country Boy」「One to Another」といった時代を象徴するアンセムを生み出してきた。
1990年にリリースされた記念すべきデビュー・アルバム『Some Friendly』を祝福すべくリリースされる本作には、オリジナル・アルバム収録曲に加え、ティム・バージェスが本リリースのために特別にキュレーションしたボーナス・トラックを含む全20曲を収録。アビイ・ロード・スタジオにてフランク・アークライトが最新リマスターを手がけている。
ザ・シャーラタンズは1988年に結成され、1990年初頭にデビュー・シングル「Indian Rope」をリリース。その直後、プロデューサーのクリス・ネーグルと共に『Some Friendly』のレコーディングを開始した。先行シングル「The Only One I Know」は全英トップ10入りを果たした彼ら初のヒット曲であり、現在も代表曲として知られている。
グルーヴに全身を預ける類稀な能力に加え、際立った楽曲を書く才能こそ、彼らを成功に導き、悲劇や音楽性の変化を乗り越えながらも活動を続け、時代を生き抜いてきた英国バンド屈指の存在たらしめた理由である。クラブで鳴らせるほどモダンでありながら、時代を超えて響く普遍性も兼ね備えた作品群は、今なお進化を続けている。

Emerging out of semi-nowhere -- well, Northwich -- the Charlatans were saddled with a name that lent itself to jibes about their quality and the early burden of being a one-hit wonder with "The Only One I Know." That all changed when Some Friendly, the groups debut, planted itself at the top of the UK charts in 1990. Drawing on Martin Blunts background in mod and psych outfits, Rob Collins outrageously funky keyboards and Tim Burgess unexpected star quality, Some Friendly combines the joyous bounce of baggy with the good natured immediacy of indie pop, then wraps it up in state of the art production. Some of the lyrics betray Burgess sharp-tongued punk background -- "Youre Not Very Well," the opener, expresses anything but sunny sentiments -- but otherwise the album delivers everything from 60s beat groove to Madchester bagginess with verve. True, the group was still following in the Stone Roses/Happy Mondays slipstream -- "Fools Gold" was the blueprint for much of the album -- but the individual delights of the slow trance "Opportunity," "Polar Bear"s upfront rhythms, and "Flower"s slightly ominous funk all show the bands abilities well. "The Only One I Know" remains the best-known cut, Blunts crisp bass and Collins Deep Purple-inspired keyboards providing its charge. That said, Some Friendlys hidden masterpiece comes at the very end -- "Sproston Green," a monster jam based around Collins supreme keyboard work, with Burgess soaring voice and lyrics matching the massive surge of the music. It concludes the record with a moment of brillaince and cements the bands place as not just another bunch of baggy wanna-bes, but rather true contenders with a claim to the throne. ~ Ned Raggett
