Patternmaster

マーク・ターナー・カルテットによる2022年作品以来、4年ぶりの新作。

「想像しうる限り最も無駄がなく、最も凝縮され、最もインスピレーションに満ちた即興の室内楽」とSwiss daily Weltwocheで評された前作につづき、パワフルなカルテットの取り組みは本作で最高に洗練され、強烈なものに達しているように思われる。
本作は、多くの点で、このグループの前作の継続であり、その発展形であると感じられ、限の即興とクールなコントロールの両方が、長年のツアーやスタジオでの活動を通じて共通の音楽的理解を培ってきたこのカルテットの原動力となっているという。
「信頼すればするほど、より多くのチャンスをつかむことができ、人々との絆も深まる」とリーダーは語る。このグループの相性の良さの中で、彼は「技術や技量を超えて、より深く音楽の芸術の世界に入っていくことができる。結果がどうなるかを心配することなく、作曲においてより自由に実験できる。なぜなら、素晴らしい結果になることを知っているからだ」とターナーはコメント。
ターナーとジェイソン・パーマーは、ジョー・マーティンのコントラバスとジョナサン・ピンソンのドラムをバックに、広大なハーモニーを伴ったテーマを吹奏。この2人は、メロディ、ハーモニー、リズムの面で、ホーン・セクションと強烈に交錯する。ターナーの6つのオリジナル曲は、古典的なビバップ時代を彷彿とさせながら、同時に未来を見据えた、時代を超越した品質を備えている。
2024年に南フランスで録音されたこのアルバムは、マンフレッド・アイヒャーがプロデュースを担当。

Tenor saxophonist Mark Turner bravely leads his pianoless quartet into the future unknown with 2026s Patternmaster. His third with the harmonically daring group, the album once again finds him drawing inspiration from the world of science fiction. Where 2014s Lathe of Heaven was named after Ursula K. Le Guins novel and 2022s Return from the Stars drew upon the work of Stanislaw Lem, Patternmaster borrows its title from Octavia E. Butlers ever timely 1976 novel about a distant future reality where the human race has been divided into hierarchical classes. Yet, even aside from the heavier philosophical notions, Patternmaster might be one of the best titles for a jazz album ever, evoking the motivic improvisational language or "patterns" that Turner and his band excel at here. Joining him is the same line-up that has been together since 2022, featuring trumpeter Jason Palmer, bassist Joe Martin, and drummer Jonathan Pinson. Musically, Turners group builds upon Ornette Coleman quartet of the 60s whose harmolodic "free" improvisations serve as a bold outline for Turners compositionally minded, if no less unfettered work. Theres an organic quality to the quartets playing, one that feels both composed and freely improvised in the moment. On the Latin-esque title track, he and Palmer seem to come up with the melody in unison, tumbling and turning like birds in the sky. That playfulness turns more aggressive on the hard-swinging "It Very Well May Be," as they chase each other like kids racing on dirt bikes over a gravel road. Throughout, Turner and Palmer stick to their motivic "pattern" approach, taking singable melodic lines and reworking them in ever evolving ways. Martin and Pinson react in kind, crafting kinetic grooves that serve as darker hued mirrors of the colorful horn melodies. This is true whether the quartet is trading spiraling lines over the roiling, minor-key "Lehmans Lair" or wrapping themselves in the warm, late afternoon glow of "The Happiest Man on Earth." Either way, theres a purity of sound and harmonic conception running through all of Turner and his quartets playing on Patternmaster that feels as deeply considered as the science fiction ideas that inspired it. ~ Matt Collar
