OTONOMA

Midori Hiranoは、京都生まれベルリン拠点の作曲家/ピアニスト/サウンドアーティスト。
CoHやIlpo Vaisanen(Pan Sonic)をはじめとする実験音楽家との共演から、映画・テレビ・展示空間の音楽まで、ジャンルを越えた活動で独自の評価を築いてきた。

本作『OTONOMA』は、そうした彼女の歩みを集約したアルバムであり、ピアノによる古典的な和声感覚と、シンセサイザーのテクスチャーが自然に溶け合う作品だ。

タイトルの「Otonoma」は、日本語の「音(Oto)」と「間(Ma)」に由来する。
音と音のあいだ、あるいは"音のための部屋"。
Hirano自身が語るように、本作はリスナーが複数の音響空間を行き来するよう設計されている。

「Illuminance」では、モジュラーシンセの豊かな質感がゆっくりと広がり、「Ame, Hikari」は写真家・川内倫子の作品のために書かれた楽曲として、雨と光の繊細なニュアンスを音で写し取る。
ミニマルなピアノ曲「Rainwalk」は、一瞬の時間を切り取るような静かな余韻を残し、「Aurora」ではドローンと電子音がより広い視野へと開かれていく。

全体を通して、リズムやメロディが前面に出るタイプの作品ではない。
しかし、音の滲み方、残響の揺らぎ、空間の呼吸に耳を預けることで、豊かな情景が立ち上がる。

アンビエント、現代音楽、実験音楽の境界を行き来しながら、聴き手の感覚そのものを静かに拡張していく一枚。

Midori Hiranos music creatively fuses classical instrumentation with electronic abstraction and field recordings, sometimes venturing into complex rhythms, particularly when shes working as MimiCof. OTONOMA is her first solo release for Thrill Jockey, following a 2025 collaboration with Brueder Selke. Its a richly expressive work that explores a variety of colorful modular and analog synthesizer tones. Opener "Illuminance" features ever-evolving sequences and glowing synth pads that sound closer to church organs, and its aim seems to be seeking enlightenment. "Ame, Hikari" makes excellent usage of natural sounds, with rainfall providing an undercurrent for the glimmering synth patterns, and a nocturnal insect-like hiss flaring up in regular intervals. "In Colours" focuses on starkly intimate pianos, shaded by a faint trickle of electronics. "Warped in Red" has the type of smeared textures that Oneohtrix Point Never regularly uses, and it lurches back and forth in a bleary haze. "Aurora" uses similar sounds but suspends them in a blurring rush, fizzling out into sharp static. "Blue Horizon" is a minimalist curiosity that bubbles up into a more melodic state towards the end. The blipping rhythm and melodic shimmer of "Oto, Kioku" is a bit closer to Hiranos more IDM-adjacent work as MimiCof. The brief ending "Was It a Dream" dissolves a contemplative piano melody into a thick fog. OTONOMA is a majestic, frequently stunning effort that delights in playing with ear-pleasing sounds but maintains a strong emotional base. ~ Paul Simpson
