ロビンソン兄弟率いるザ・ブラック・クロウズ、再びジェイ・ジョイスをプロデュースに迎えた10枚目のアルバム『ア・パウンド・オブ・フェザーズ』をリリース。

After reestablishing themselves with Happiness Bastards in 2024, the Black Crowes came strong back with one of the most exciting records of their long career with 2026s A Pound of Feathers. If Happiness was a Crowes album through and through, sounding like an obvious follow up to early work like Shake Your Money Maker, the murky, reckless, and somewhat dark Feathers is a spiritual descendant of a more complicated album like Amorica. Crafted by the Robinson brothers and drummer Cully Symington over a two-week span, the record is loose and gritty, sounding like a band with nothing to prove and all the time in the world to kick up some serious rock & roll noise. And strum their way through a handful of the tenderest tracks theyve put on tape. And take some really cool left turns like getting scruffily punk on the rip roaring "Do the Parasite!" where they come off like a southern fried Hives or getting extremely heavy, psychedelic and Zeppelin-esque on "Doomsday Doggerel." Rich Robinsons guitars are a delight throughout; he sounds like hes having a blast tossing off molten lava riffs and lightning fingered leads. Chris Robinson is at his strutting best on the rockers (the impossibly fun “It’s Like That” or a song that no doubt would have been a hit in 1992, "Profane Prophecy"), strips away the facade to get to something real on the introspective ballads ("Pharmacy Chronicles"), and shifts into a gear the band have never reached before (the dark, angry, and murky "Blood Red Regrets" or the swinging mid-tempo nocturnal delight "High and Lonesome" which comes complete with deeply echoing guitar leads and some ritzy violin.) These stylistic left turns are shockingly good and show that when the brothers are left to their own devices, they have more to offer than only good time rockers and tear-stained ballads. Not that theres anything wrong with their status quo, especially when the quick recording and obvious inspiration leads to some of the best rockers and ballads theyve done. Add it all together and A Pound of Feathers is not only reaffirmation of their comeback, but the kind of daring and defiant record that its a miracle that a band this far into their career could still make. Is it their best? Its hard to top Southern Harmony and Musical Companion or Amorica, but Feathers comes damn close and thats enough to make it something quite special. ~ Tim Sendra
