ジャズのみならずポップスやルーツ・ミュージックなどあらゆるジャンルを独自のサウンドで表現し、これまでにグラミー賞受賞1回、ノミネート8回を数える、今年3月に75歳となるギター・レジェンド、ビル・フリゼールの2年振りの新作がリリース!

ブルーノートから5作目となる今回のアルバムは、彼が近年最も共演しているミュージシャンたちであるジェニー・シェインマン(violin)、エイヴィン・カン(viola)、ハンク・ロバーツ(cello)、トーマス・モーガン(b)、ルディ・ロイストン(ds)との新たなセクステットでレコーディング。核となる曲は2025年にアメリカ各地でライヴ・レコーディングされたもので、その後カリフォルニア州のスタジオで追加の録音が行われた。ライヴ・パフォーマンスの即興性とスタジオでの音響的な創作過程が融合したハイブリッドな作品となっている。

本作のコンセプトは、フリゼールが30年以上前に見た夢がもとになっているとのこと。その夢の中で古書が積み上げられた図書館の中にいた彼は、修道僧たちに「あなたがミュージシャンだと私たちは知っている。だからあなたに本当の音楽とは何かを聴いてほしい」と伝えられ、その後彼が愛するニーノ・ロータ、セロニアス・モンク、ソニー・ロリンズ、チャールス・アイヴス、ジミ・ヘンドリックス、ハンク・ウィリアムス、アンドレス・セゴビア、ロバート・ジョンソンなどの音楽が透き通るようにクリアに流れてきて、目を覚ましたという。それ以来、夢で体験した音楽の純粋さと鮮烈さを理想として追い求めてきたフリゼールは、「長年にわたって彼らと演奏しているうちに、あの昔見た夢に近づいていると感じる瞬間があった。あの夢では、あらゆる音楽が同時に鳴り響いていたんだ」と本作の経緯について語っている。

Bill Frisell wanders the sonic valleys of his creative mind on 2026s In My Dreams. The album, his fifth for Blue Note, finds him working with his longtime trio associates bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston. Joining them is a string ensemble he also has deep ties with featuring violinist Jenny Scheinman, violist Eyvind Kang, and cellist Hank Roberts. This is the same string line-up with which he recorded 2005s Richter 858. However, where last time he drew inspiration from the work of German visual artist Gerhard Richter, here he conjures a dream of the American West. Its a vibe that Frisell, who grew up out west himself in Denver and graduated from the University of Northern Colorado, has woven into his musical identity, blending his jazz improv skills with his love of folk and country. Here, he continues to straddle stylistic worlds, leading his string chamber jazz band as if he has one foot in the ballroom and one by a campfire on a cowboy cattle drive. Some originals, like the title track, are lyrical and pretty, full of lush purple sage harmonies that trail off with the setting sun. Others, like "Again" and "Why," are more angular, with Frisells soft fretboard tones bumping up against sharp string accents like a child jumping from rock to rock across a small stream. Theres an underlying complexity of emotion to Frisells work on In My Dreams and though never explicitly stated, one gets the sense that hes wrestling with all of the good, bad, and ugly aspects of Americas westward expansion; a history that stretches from its wagon trains of the 19th century, through the Civil War, and into the cultural advancements and struggles of the early 20th century. Its a meditative experience, where classic folk melodies and standards seem to shimmer into focus like a mirage in desert sun. One minute, hes turning his gaze toward the dark sophistication of Duke Ellingtons "Isfahan," before sinking into the rustic, fiddle-strewn melancholy of Stephen Fosters "Hard Times" the next. His chimeric vision of the west is perhaps best expressed on "Give Me a Home," where he interpolates the traditional tune "Home on the Range," stretching and elongating each phrase as if repeating a mantra. With In My Dreams, Frisell pulls you into his western reverie, a wagon train journey into his soul. ~ Matt Collar
