Despite all his dabblings with pop, perpetually stoned rap star Wiz Khalifa presents a collection of smooth, mellow, and smoke-clouded tracks completely absent of any bids for mainstream acceptance on his mixtape Kush + Orange Juice 2. The tape is nostalgic on multiple tiers, both as a throwback to Wizs own much-loved 2010 mixtape Kush & Orange Juice, as well as with its nods to 90s G-funk and other aspects of golden age hip-hop. Khalifa keeps his eyes glassy and his blood pressure low throughout the entirety of Kush + Orange Juice 2, with relaxed tempos, fluttering synth melodies, easygoing flows, and lyrics that keep their mind on weed, sex, money, and partying. Most of the songs here are cut from the same cloth, and standouts like "Cashed Out" with its liquid bass and a verse from Larry June or the harmony-rich stoner anthem "Bring Your Lungs" just melt into the friendly, happily high atmosphere shared by the rest of the tracks. Even without diversifying too much from a few main concerns, its still one of the most enjoyable sets of music from Wiz in some time. The complete lack of ambition is a good thing in this case, and Khalifa embracing old habits and the ways hes set in results in a blissful slow ride with no particular destination in mind. ~ TiVo Staff
