テナー・サックス奏者メリッサ・アルダナのブルーノート第3作目!

キューバのフィリン音楽伝統に由来する楽曲を驚くべき新解釈で提示する絶妙なバラード・アルバム。フィリンとは1940～60年代に流行した歌謡スタイルで、ナット・キング・コールらアメリカ人ミュージシャンの影響を強く受けている。「フィリン」という言葉は「フィーリング」に由来し、深く心に響く演奏でアルダナは、キューバ人ピアニストのゴンサロ・ルバルカバ、ベーシストのピーター・ワシントン、ドラマーのカッシュ・アバデイからなる卓越したカルテットを率いる。さらに2曲ではスペシャル・ゲストとしてヴォーカリストのセシル・マクローリン・サルヴァントが参加。
バンドはまた、ブラジルの作曲家エルメート・パスコーアル"Igrejinha(Little Church"とカルトーラの「沈黙のバラ」もカヴァー。
チリ生まれのサックス奏者、メリッサ・アルダナは、レコーディング・アーティストとして活動する限り、バラードのアルバムを作りたいと願っていたとのこと。1963年にリリースされたジョン・コルトレーンの名盤『バラード』を北極星として、アルダナはスローテンポのプロジェクトを、生涯をかけて追求してきたサウンドを進化させる手段だと考えていたという。
「私は、ソニー・ロリンズ、ウェイン・ショーター、ジョン・コルトレーン、ジョー・ヘンダーソン、レスター・ヤング、チャーリー・パーカー、ドン・バイアスなど、多くのミュージシャンたちの曲を書き起こしています。彼らにとって、音そのものが感情を表現するツールなのです」と彼女は説明する。「一音一音が、ひとつの世界なのです。演奏には技術的な側面もありますが、その一方で、音には神秘的な側面もあり、それは…今でも、それが何なのかは正確にはわからないのです」。

Tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana envelopes you in a deep romantic mood on her third Blue Note album, 2026s Filin. While the album certainly draws direct inspiration from classic albums like John Coltranes Ballads and Miles Davis Kind of Blue, it also finds the Chilean-born improvisor interpreting songs from the Cuban filin, or "feeling" style of music; a trend of ballad-centric songwriting that began in the 40s blending American Popular Standards and jazz with Cuban influences. Collaborating with Aldana on the album is Cuban-born pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba who brings not only his lush chordal voicings, but also his deep grasp of the artists who wrote in the filin style. Joining them are several close associates in bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Kush Abadey. Together, they sink into these lyrical songs, conjuring the kind of burnished afterglow vibe players like Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, and Cannonball Adderley excelled at. Aldana proves just as masterful, commanding each phrase with a tender warmth. Its a film noir atmosphere she captures from the start on the opening take of Salvador Levis "La Sentencia," her throaty tenor curling around Rubalcabas piano like cigarette smoke. Particularly engaging are songs like Frank Dominguez "Imagenes" and Claudio Estradas "Ocasa," enrapturing melodies that nicely evoke standards like "Tis Autumn," but in their own intimate, tropical way. Equally compelling is singer Cecile McLorin Salvants guest appearances on Marta Valdezs "No Te Empenes Mas" and Cartolas "Las Rosas No Hablan," her voice a bright foil for Aldanas dusky tenor. Theres an organic quality to Aldanas playing, one thats especially redolent on her bittersweet reading of Hermeto Pascoals "Little Church" where, framed by Rubalcabas swirling, dreamlike arpeggios, she plays the melody as if whispering through tears. More than just crafting an album of romantic ballads, with Filin Aldana conjures the lingering, almost physical memory of romantic love; a feeling gone, but never forgotten. ~ Matt Collar
