Theres no doubt that London during the mid-60s was one of the swingingest, downright hippest eras in the history of the world. From the fit of the clothes to the look of films, the nifty turns of phrase to the sound of the dazzling records being made, theres a wealth of brilliance to discover. Numerous compilations have done their best to bring the era to life and this is easily one of the best. Whats It All About? Film & TV Music from Swinging London does what it says on the package and does it with the prerequisite style. It jumbles together TV and movie themes, songs from films, tracks by top bands and underground faves that appeared on both, and the occasional ringer to give a clear picture of just how much fun everyone was having. Mixing them all together provides the listener the opportunity for some thrilling juxtapositions like Laurie Johnsons rousing theme to the Avengers parked next to the swagger mod explosion of the Small Faces "Ive Got Mine" or Sonny Rollins urbane theme to Alfie next to Chris Farlowes over the top rendition of "Paint It Black." These kinds of happy surprises happen throughout the album and there is plenty for both fans of library music and 60s rock to (re)discover and love here. Much of it is fairly well known already but there are some semi-obscure gems on board to tempt the trainspotters, like the London Waits jauntily Baroque theme to the TV show Softly Softly, Blossom Toes demonically psychedelic "Look at Me, Im You," or the Scaffolds cheeky "Liver Birds," which sports a drum break ripe for sampling. A deep dive into the set is like taking a technicolor voyage back in time and whether you were there or not, its a trip well worth the price. Indeed, collecting all these gems on their own would set one back a pretty penny, so kudos to Cherry Red for packing them all together in cost-effective fashion. ~ Tim Sendra
