ビッグ・シーフで10年にわたり活動を共にしてきたバック・ミークとプロデューサーのジェームス・クリヴチェニア。そのパートナーシップから生まれた本作『The Mirror』は、バンドの持つライヴならではの躍動感と、斜めから差し込むような電子音の世界を融合させるという発想から始まった。ビッグ・シーフの『Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You』や、クリヴチェニア自身の最新ソロ作『Performing Belief』などのプロダクション経験を通じ、電子的要素によってサウンドに生命を吹き込み、奥行きのある音像を探求している。演奏者たちはリアルタイムで呼応し、その演奏がモジュラー・シンセサイザーを駆動していく...『The Mirror』は、相互作用的な実験を通して共同体のムードを楽曲に落とし込んでいる。

本作には、友人や家族、そして長年のコラボレーターたちが参加。エイドリアン・レンカーをはじめ、アダム・ブリズビン (gt) 、ケン・ウッドワード (Ba) 、さらに、作曲家でアンビエント・ミュージシャンのアレックス・ソマーズがシンセサイザーやトイ・マイク、ピアノで参加し、ハープの才媛として知られるメアリー・ラティモアが万華鏡のような音色を提供している。ドラマーはクリヴチェニアを含む4人が入れ替わりで参加し、幅広いダイナミクスを生み出しており、ミークの兄であるディラン・ミークがピアノ、鍵盤、ヴォーカルで参加。前作でエンジニアも担当したエイドリアン・オルセンがモジュラー・シンセを用いて多彩なサウンドと旋律を残している。

While Buck Meeks fourth solo album, The Mirror, remains in the vein of the tender, countrified meditations of previous releases, it takes his inclusion of textural electronics a bit further on a record about love and its various challenges and disappointments -- especially those perpetrated by him. The Mirror was produced by his Big Thief bandmate James Krivchenia, who is known for his distinctive, kinetic drumming as well as for his engineering and production work for the group. By this point, Krivchenia had also produced music for such experimental- and psychedelic-leaning artists as Mega Bog, Westerman, and Nick Hakim (the latter as remix producer). Some of the more conspicuous examples of the producers footprint here include the synthy bell-like tones, low background noise, and briskly shuffling drums that flesh out "Pretty Flowers," and the particularly trippy "Demon," which includes ominous, "I Want You (Shes So Heavy)"-type guitar tones as well as staticky effects, feedback, and spectral backing singers in one portion of the song. On that track, the noise helps illustrate tunefully delivers lyrics like "But my demons still breathing/I thought that I had killed it/But its crawling in the weeds again." On "Heart in the Mirror," a sweeter and more upbeat track with simpler drums, Meek goes on to sing, "Lost my voice singing about evil/And the people that Ive lost." It should be noted that Krivchenia is not the only drummer on the album: Jonathan Wilson, Kyle Crane (Lorde, Madison Cunningham), and Jesse Quebbeman-Turley (Craig Finn, Cherry Glazerr) also contributed performances. The records many guests also include the likes of harpist Mary Lattimore, experimental musician Alex Somers (synthesizer, toy microphone, piano), Adrian Olsen (modular synths), and backing vocalists such as Jolie Holland and Big Thiefs Adrianne Lenker. Nevertheless, Meeks warm, lilting melodies and impeccably innocent voice, as well as the fact that these songs are rooted in acoustic and electric guitar and recorded mostly live, land it squarely in the indie country-rock domain even as its regretful emotions are amplified by unusual and distorted sonics. After he works his way through songs with titles like "Can I Mend It?," "Worms," and "God Knows Why," most listeners will likely be willing to give the sometimes anti-hero a second chance thanks to his deep self-awareness, charming turns of phrase, intention to do the work, and expressions of seemingly genuine affection. ~ Marcy Donelson
