AT THE MOVIES is a compilation of Creedence Clearwater Revival songs featured in various films. Creedence Clearwater Revival: John Fogerty (vocals, guitar); Tom Fogerty (guitar); Stu Cook (bass); Doug Clifford (drums). Digitally remastered by George Horn (2000 Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Fantasy Records has discovered many ways to recycle the back catalog of its most successful act, Creedence Clearwater Revival, over the years, and this is one of the more curious examples of how they've repackaged their work. At the Movies features 13 CCR classics that have appeared in major motion pictures, though they're not necessarily big hits -- if you recall hearing any of these tunes in Indian Summer, Prefontaine, or Who'll Stop the Rain, you're a more avid movie buff than most folks. The closest thing to a rarity here is "Keep On Chooglin'," which is still in the collections of most fans, so despite its ostensive theme, ultimately this plays like yet another Creedence hits collection. And as such things go, it's a good hits collection, perhaps a little skimpy at 13 songs, but including some truly great songs from one of the best American bands of their day, including "Fortunate Son," "Hey Tonight," "Born on the Bayou," "Up Around the Band," and the long version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Chronicle, Vol. One is still your best value if you want to buy a one-disc collection of Creedence Clearwater Revival at their peak, but there isn't a bad song to be found on At the Movies, and with or without popcorn, it's great music from a superlative band. ~ Mark Deming
