"I'm a little old fashioned" sings Ann Nesby on this album's title cut, dropping a valuable hint about the depth of her talent and the sensibilities that inform her vision. From the very first cut, "Seasons," it's clear that this R&B siren's style is full of grace and elegance, devoid of showiness or self-indulgence, more closely aligned with the spirit of Aretha than any of Nesby's pre-fab contemporaries. While PUT IT ON PAPER is a thoroughly modern album full of state-of-the-art R&B production (more slyly programmed beats than you can shake a stick at), Nesby's warm, organic approach is redolent of an era when the term "soul music" was still taken literally. If any further proof of this is required, attention should be directed to the aforementioned title song, where none other than the Rev. Al Green provides a vocal foil for Nesby, testifying atop the TSOP horn section. Now that's soul power.
