そのヒラリー・ダフがアトランティック・レコーズと契約!ティーン・アイコンから大人のポップ・スターへと成長した彼女が、約10年振りとなる通算6作目となるスタジオ・アルバムをリリースすることを発表した。『luck...or something』と名付けられた本作は、この10年間に彼女が経験した事、感じた想い、そして成長が反映された作品になっているという。アルバムからは先行シングルとして「Mature」が先日リリースされているが、この曲はヒラリーとしたシングル「Mature」も収録される。ヒラリーと、夫でグラミー賞受賞歴のあるソングライター/プロデューサーでブリトニー・スピアーズ、ピンクらを手掛けるマシュー・コーマ、そしてホールジーやエイバ・マックスを手掛けるヒットメーカー、マディソン・ラブの共同制作で、多感な時期の恋愛の不運だった実体験を基にした、ヒラリーらしいエモーショナルでほろ苦くも、キラキラとしたポップサウンドに仕上がっている。"成熟"を意味するタイトルにも彼女の想いが反映されているに違いない。(1/2)

アルバム・タイトルについて、ヒラリー自身は次のように語っている。
「「この業界で育った私が、どうしてしっかりしていられるのかとよく聞かれるんだけど、このアルバム・タイトルが私の答え。運と、そして『あるいは何か』が大きく作用しているの。これまでに経験してきたことがたくさんあって、それが最終的に私を形作ってきたんだなと感じているのよ。」

Seemingly out of nowhere, Hilary Duff made a confident return to the scene with the best album of her career to date. Her first in over a decade, Luck…or Something makes it clear that the one-time Disney Channel staple and teen movie icon is just that -- a former child star -- and is now a mature grown-up in her late thirties, married and running a household with four kids. Along with that reality check for anyone still stuck in the early aughts comes a load of real-life struggles that is instantly relatable. Considering that she was one of the biggest child stars at the start of the millennium, its almost a shock that shes so "normal" and grounded. So why even bother making a comeback? Mainly because Luck is that good. Refreshingly introspective, stylish, and transparent, its all the more eye-opening that it was produced by her husband, Matthew Koma, who deserves a small nod for the shared exposure on some of these songs. Beautiful and understated, these songs veer toward honest acceptance of where shes at in life: stale conversations, petty arguments, a stagnant love life, fears of infidelity, quiet anxiety about whats to come, and plenty of other reasonable insecurities that never get too woefully pitiable. The very Swiftian "Roommates" is explicit in its honesty and aching vulnerability, a bittersweet view at what can happen in a long-term union. Meanwhile, "Mature" is directed to her younger self (reclaiming that gross phrase "so mature for your age"), and the blink-182 interpolating "Growing Up" injects a shared nostalgia through a familiar pop-punk track as Duff recalls fond memories of simpler times. As unflinching as "Roommates," the bright synth pop of "Future Tripping" shimmers as she wonders, "Are we having enough sex?" and remembers a time when playful jokes were the norm (theres a Bon Iver line that should really land for anyone in the know). Digging deeper, "The Optimist" is a tearjerker delivered as a bittersweet, countrified dirge, while "Holiday Party" recounts Duffs paranoia and recurring bad dreams about infidelity, but its set to such a catchy, sleekly produced pop gem that youre dancing through the pain. After the electronic dance flourish of Lucks 2015 predecessor, Breathe In. Breathe Out., its nice to hear something that feels more like her own voice and perspective. This poppy singer/songwriter approach is grounded and perfectly suited for her, particularly at a time in her life when hindsight is clearer than ever and lifes highs and lows can be evaluated with some well-earned wisdom. Its a brand of adult pop that is so welcome -- especially for a fan base that is aging right alongside her -- by offering more than the genres typical youthful perspective without feeling stale, overly nostalgic, or stuck in the past. ~ Neil Z.
